Your EPF is your retirement savings, but many people do not know how to claim or withdraw their money when they need it. To get rid of all the confusion that it brings along, you no longer need to visit an EPFO office or run after your employer for a signature. If your UAN, Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details are linked and verified, you can claim EPF online from your phone or laptop in a few minutes. In this guide, we explain how to claim EPF online, which form to use, what has changed in 2026, how to track your claim, and what to do once the money reaches your bank.
The online method saves time and effort. You do not have to stand in a queue or send paper forms, and in most cases your employer’s approval is not needed. The claim is verified with an OTP on your mobile number that is linked with your Aadhaar card, and the money goes straight to your bank account. You can also follow your claim’s progress at any time on the portal. Online claims are also usually settled faster than offline ones, which need paperwork and manual checking.
Who can claim EPF and how?
There are two main ways to take out your EPF money:
- The first is a final settlement, which you can apply for after leaving a job or retiring.
- The second is an advance or partial withdrawal while you are still working, which is allowed only for specific needs.
The rules for partial withdrawals changed this year. The Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme, 2026 came into effect on 29 June, and it merged the earlier given provisions into three groups:
- Essential Needs: covers money needed for illness or medical treatment, education, and marriage for yourself and your family. Reports say you can use it up to 10 times for education and up to 5 times for marriage.
- Housing Needs: This is for buying or building a house, renovating or repairing it, and repaying a home loan. Reports say it can be used up to 5 times.
- Special Circumstances: This is for situations outside the other two groups, such as unemployment or a natural calamity, and you do not need to give a detailed reason. Reports say it can be used up to 2 times in a financial year.
Most partial withdrawals now need at least 12 months of membership. You must also leave at least 25 percent of your eligible balance in the account, so on a balance of ₹1 lakh, ₹25,000 stays and up to ₹75,000 can be taken, subject to the scheme’s rules.
Things you need before you claim EPF online
A few things must be prepared beforehand:
- Your UAN (Universal Account Number) should be active, and you should remember your password.
- Your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account details should show as approved under Manage and then KYC on the portal.
- Your Aadhaar must be linked to a working mobile number, because the OTP goes there. If you have left your job, mark your exit date under the Manage section first.
You will not need to send many papers. In most cases the portal only asks you to confirm your bank details and, for some claims, upload a document such as a cancelled cheque. Make sure your name is the same on your Aadhaar, your bank account and your UAN. A mismatch is one of the most common reasons for delay.
Which form should you use?
Form 19 is for the final settlement of your EPF after you leave a job or retire. Form 31 is for an advance or partial withdrawal while you are still working. Form 10C is for the pension money, which sits in a separate EPS account, so Form 19 alone does not give you that money. Form 10D is for a monthly pension, for people with over 10 years of service who have reached age 58. Choosing the wrong form is a common reason for rejection, so decide this before you submit.
How to claim EPF online on the EPFO portal: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Log in. Open the EPFO Unified Member Portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in) and log in with your UAN, password and captcha.
Step 2: Check your KYC. Go to Manage, then KYC, and confirm that your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details are approved. Fix anything that is pending before you go ahead.
Step 3: Open the claim section. Go to Online Services and click Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C & 10D).
Step 4: Verify your bank account. Enter the last four digits of your bank account number and verify them. Then click Proceed for Online Claim.
Step 5: Choose what you want. Select the claim you need: full PF settlement (Form 19), pension withdrawal (Form 10C) or PF advance (Form 31). For an advance, pick the reason and enter the amount. Add your address as it appears on Aadhaar, and upload a document only if the portal asks for it.
Step 6: Submit with OTP. Tick the declaration, enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile and submit. Save your claim reference number. That is all you need to claim EPF online through the portal.
How to claim EPF online using the UMANG app
If you do not have a laptop, no need to worry; the UMANG app works fine on a mobile phone as well. Open EPFO inside the app, go to Employee Centric Services and tap Raise Claim. Enter your UAN and OTP, choose the form, confirm your bank details and submit. The requirements are the same as on the portal.
How to check your EPF claim status
After you claim EPF online, you can follow its progress. Log in to the member portal, go to Online Services and select Track Claim Status. You can also check it through the UMANG app. The status shows whether your claim is still being processed, settled or rejected.
Settlement time depends on the type of claim. Some guides say online claims are usually settled in 5 to 10 working days, while final settlements can take around 15 to 20 days. Smaller claims may now be settled automatically within about 3 days.
One thing to remember is that you cannot cancel an online claim from the portal. If you filed it by mistake, contact your EPFO regional office as soon as possible.
Common reasons a claim gets rejected
Some small mistakes while claiming the EPF might result in the claim being rejected. When people try to claim EPF online with details that do not match across Aadhaar, the bank account and the UAN, EPFO can reject the request, and you have to correct the details and file again. Other common reasons are KYC that is not approved, the wrong form, or an earlier claim for the same purpose that is still in process. If a claim is delayed, you can raise a grievance at epfigms.gov.in. Also be careful with fake calls. If anyone asks for money to release your claim, hang up and report it.
A quick note on tax: if your service is under five years and the amount is above ₹50,000, TDS may apply, and you can submit Form 15G if you are eligible. Keep your PAN linked, and check the latest tax rules before withdrawing a large amount.
