Marlin stands as an open protocol designed to furnish a high-performance programmable network infrastructure catering to the needs of decentralized finance (DeFi) and Web 3.0 applications. Operating within the Marlin network are nodes known as Metanodes, responsible for running the MarlinVM. This virtual router interface empowers developers to deploy customized overlays and conduct edge computations, contributing to the protocol's adaptability.

The MarlinVM facilitates the creation of diverse overlays, including low-latency block multicast for blockchain scalability, mempool synchronization for arbitrageurs, mesh networks, anonymity networks such as mixnets, and device optimization for caching API responses from platforms like Infura and Alchemy.

POND, the native utility token of Marlin, plays a pivotal role in the network. It is utilized for staking to run validator nodes, participating in governance by making and voting on proposals, and determining a roster of network performance auditors. Additionally, POND is instrumental in compensating users from an insurance fund in the event of a Service Level Agreement (SLA) breach.

Marlin's overarching objective is to actualize a decentralized web, ensuring that blockchain-secured applications exhibit performance indistinguishable from Web 2.0 standards. Founded by developers Siddhartha, Prateesh, and Roshan, Marlin is a project shaped by their extensive expertise in peer-to-peer networking. Siddhartha, known for his role in developing Zilliqa, the pioneering high-throughput blockchain employing sharding in production, brings valuable experience from notable stints at Microsoft and Adobe. His contributions extend to authoring two U.S. patents. Prateesh, a Ph.D. candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), specializes in Computer Networks. Roshan, an enthusiastic open-source advocate, has contributed to the Boost C++ libraries.

Marlin's team comprises former Ethereum Foundation researchers, International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) world medallists, and developers with backgrounds at tech giants like Facebook, Cisco, and Bosch. Notably, the project benefits from the guidance of advisors including the former CEO of Bittorrent, professors at MIT and Princeton, and authors of influential peer-to-peer (P2P) papers such as Chord DHT.

Supported by backers like Binance Labs, Electric Capital, and Michael Arrington, Marlin stands at the forefront of innovative blockchain solutions, underpinned by a diverse and accomplished team with a wealth of experience in P2P networking and distributed systems.

What makes Marlin Unique?

Marlin distinguishes itself as one of the few layer-0 projects concentrating on optimizations at the network layer. Drawing parallels with Filecoin, which incentivizes IPFS, Marlin positions itself as the incentivized counterpart to libp2p. This distinctive approach renders Marlin pervasive in the decentralized web, playing a crucial role in facilitating the networking between distributed nodes essential for the operation of peer-to-peer applications.

Network Security

Operating on the Ethereum blockchain, Marlin's smart contracts benefit from the security ensured by the network of Ethereum nodes, ensuring the accurate execution of these contracts.


- The Marlin network, comprising Metanodes, faces the risk of having their staked MPOND and delegated POND slashed in the event of DDoS and spam attacks. This potential penalty is incurred if the Metanodes fail to verify the content they introduce into the network.

- Similar to Proof-of-Work mechanisms, the network employs tunable redundancy through erasure coding. This approach guarantees users receive the desired performance and availability levels according to the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) they specify. Users are charged proportionately based on their chosen SLAs.

- To ensure continuous performance and coverage monitoring for applications requiring heightened reliability, a network of third-party auditors, pre-approved by the Pond DAO, deploys probes globally. An insurance fund, backed by the DAO, is in place to compensate users who experience losses due to the network's inability to meet its SLA guarantees. This mechanism provides an additional layer of protection and accountability for users relying on the Marlin network.
