Cronos (CRO) Price Live Chart

Cronos (CRO)

Cronos (CRO) functions as the native cryptocurrency token for Cronos Chain, a decentralized and open-source blockchain developed by Crypto.com. This blockchain is part of Crypto.com's efforts to promote the widespread use of cryptocurrencies, enhancing individual control over finances, data security, and identity protection. The CRO blockchain is primarily utilized to empower the Crypto.com Pay mobile payments application. As Crypto.com aims to extend the utility of the CRO platform, it envisions incorporating it into its various other products. CRO was introduced between November and December 2018.

Founders

Cronos was introduced by Crypto.com, aligning with the company's goal of making cryptocurrency widely accessible. The foundation of Crypto.com, originally named "Monaco Technologies GmbH," dates back to June 2016, established by Kris Marszalek, Rafael Melo, Gary Or, and Bobby Bao.

Kris Marszalek, who holds a degree from the Polish Adam Mickiewicz University, has founded and led multiple businesses, including Starline Polska (consumer electronics design), YIYI (location-based service mobile app), and BEECRAZY (e-commerce).

Rafael Melo, with an engineering degree from PUC-Rio, boasts over 15 years of finance experience. His career includes pivotal roles in notable Asian companies and contributions to securing significant funding for the Ensogo social commerce platform.

Gary Or, a seasoned software engineer, brings over nine years of full-stack engineering expertise. Preceding his co-founding role at Crypto.com, Or contributed to Ensogo as a platform architect and co-founded Foris (mobile app development). He completed his engineering and computer science studies at the University of Hong Kong.

Bobby Bao, before being part of the Crypto.com launch, gained experience in the M&A department of the China Renaissance investment bank. Bao pursued education at the University of Melbourne, NYU Stern School of Business, and the College of William & Mary.

What makes it unique?

The CRO blockchain is dedicated to offering practical value to users of Crypto.com's diverse range of payment, trading, and financial services solutions. Token holders have the opportunity to stake their CRO coins on the Crypto.com Chain, assuming the role of validators and earning transaction fees for processing activities within the network. Additionally, CRO coins can be utilized for settling transaction fees on the Cronos Chain. The Crypto.com Pay app allows users to receive attractive cashback rewards of up to 20% when making payments to merchants using CRO, and up to 10% when engaging in activities like buying gift cards or conducting peer-to-peer transfers.

Furthermore, CRO holders can access token rewards for specific listings through the Crypto.com App and can also earn annual interest ranging from 10% to 12% by staking Crypto.com Coins on the exchange app or metal Visa Card. CRO's role extends as a catalyst for Crypto.com's global crypto adoption strategy, with the company continually striving to create innovative use cases that empower users to enhance their control over finances, data, and identities.

Network security

CRO, the native cryptocurrency of Crypto.com, is constructed on the Ethereum blockchain, adhering to the ERC-20 compatibility standard. This standard ensures that CRO tokens are compatible with various Ethereum-based applications, wallets, and platforms.

The Ethereum network secures CRO through the utilization of the Ethash proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism. Ethash is designed to provide security and immutability to the Ethereum blockchain by requiring miners to perform complex mathematical computations to validate transactions and produce new blocks. This process not only secures the network against attacks but also ensures the integrity and reliability of transactions and data stored on the blockchain.

As a result of its integration with Ethereum, CRO benefits from the established security measures and network effects of one of the most widely used and recognized blockchain platforms in the cryptocurrency space. This connection allows CRO to tap into Ethereum's global user base and ecosystem while leveraging the security provided by Ethash-based PoW consensus.

Recent developments

The launch of Cronos Explorer on the Cronos Testnet has been announced, bringing exciting features and functionalities to users and developers. Cronos Explorer aims to become the reference block explorer for the Cronos ecosystem, catering to the specific needs of users and developers. While it introduces new features, it's important to note that not all functionalities of existing block explorers are yet available. For Cronos Mainnet, Cronoscan will continue to be used, and there's no decided timeframe for potential migration. The legacy block explorer for Cronos Testnet, based on Blockscout, remains available until the new Cronos Explorer achieves feature parity. Cronos Explorer offers wallet information, block details, transaction insights, and more for Testnet users. It also aims to make accessing information from both the EVM and Cosmos SDK layers easier. Notable new features include monitoring transaction fees of Cosmos-level transactions, filtering token transactions, and analyzing internal transactions. Upcoming enhancements include proxy contract verification, expanded chain statistics, node operator data display, UI improvements, and the development of its own API.
